About Stefan
Stefan creates visceral art that attempts to explain the world around him. His use of abstraction, colour, gestural mark making and texture help to create art layered with chaotic beauty and depth. He aims to draw the audience into his work with the hope that it evokes an emotional response whilst also being aesthetically pleasing. The artists that inspire him include Jamie Reid, Francis Bacon, Picasso, Basquiat, Joan Eardley, Bomberg, Rothko, Willem De Kooning and Frank Auerbach. However he has always found inspiration in the arts and culture.
Stefan predominantly works with oil paint, ink and charcoal on canvas and paper. He believes that art should be a completely free form of expression and therefore will experiment and play whilst creating art. For example, Stefan will leave paintings outside in harsh weather or will pour white spirit on the canvas and light it on fire, in order to add unpredictable marks and texture whilst also adding conflict to the artwork. His canvases tend to have multiple underpaintings that are glimpsed through the many layers. He uses a palette knife to push paint around to create gouges and fleshy lumps but has also resorted to power tools. There are also times when he will also include the written word taken from his sketchbooks to add to the overall narrative.
